When Jesse Is Heavyweight shared a young fan’s story on social media, it was a reminder that sometimes you never know where your music will impact or what it might mean to someone listening alone.

The young woman, who describes herself as dealing with deep depression, said she was constantly searching for little “pick me ups” to get through difficult days. Then she came across Jesse Is Heavyweight.

She had read about Jesse’s ambitious plan involving Rocket Lab and MIT to send a music project to Venus on a probe this summer. The idea caught her attention. There was something almost surreal about an artist thinking on that scale, and it made her curious enough to investigate further.

When Good Luck became available on Apple Music, she pressed play.

According to her account, she was already in an extremely dangerous place. She says she had obtained a potentially fatal amount of prescription medication and was contemplating the unthinkable. Instead, she began listening to the EP.

One song became another.

She says songs including “Vision Quest,” “Good Luck,” “Everything Mama Told Me” and “Don’t Drop The Ball” kept her engaged. More importantly, she says the experience shifted her attention from ending her life toward imagining what might come next.

By the time the EP ended, she says she felt something she hadn’t expected to feel: excitement about her future.

She flushed the pills.

Today, she says she is a DJ in her hometown.

Her explanation for the connection is striking. Jesse’s story, she says, showed her that someone could endure the worst parts of society and still create something ambitious. If Jesse could keep moving forward despite significant hardship, she began wondering whether she could do the same with her own suicidal thoughts.

That doesn’t make an EP a substitute for professional mental-health care, and Jesse’s music didn’t single-handedly solve everything this young woman was experiencing. Depression and suicidal thinking are complicated, and recovery can require ongoing support.

But great art can sometimes create a moment of interruption, a reason to wait, listen, breathe and reconsider what happens next.

For this lucky girl, Good Luck became that interruption.

A collection of songs became a few more minutes. Those minutes struck a chord and became a decision. And that decision became another morning, another idea, another opportunity to build a life.

Now she’s behind the boards uplifting crowds through the gift of music.
